About me….
December 1, 2007
Hi, I’m steve. For reasons I can’t quite remember, I once wrote a piece of rhyming doggerel on a thread about religion and atheism on the CiF blogs on the Grauniad. Despite my being a devout atheist, that piece had a mind of its own, making just as much fun of the atheists as the theists.
It snowballed.
I found myself writing all sorts of inappropriate doggerel on CiF and the GU books blog, much to the annoyance of many commenters and bloggers. I also put some bits on some more friendly blogs (and don’t worry guys – I’ll put in some links to your blogs, just as soon as I get the hang of this blog software. I do value the platform you allowed me.)
Long ago, I used to be involved in medical research. Eventually, I became fed up with that, and quit to set up a plant business. Unfortunately, that never materialised; once we’d got to the stage where our own garden and plant-raising set-up was ready, I became ill, and now the physical work is an impossibility for me. We’re left with an overgrown garden, where you never know what weird and wonderful rarety will bloom through the nettles and brambles. The wildlife loves it….ten years ago, we’d have run out to chase off the deer; last week, one came up within ten yards of the house, and we watched in silence….if she chews something valuable, something grown from seed from one of the collecting expeditions I once subscribed to, it no longer matters….we just take photos now….
Hence I spend a lot of hours messing around on the computer, trying to find obscure rhymes, and playing lots of Freecell (my best streak is 1086 wins….boy, is that a definition of sad….)
Feel free to leave a comment, even if you think the doggerel’s awful….my wife hates it, but she still talks to me….

Hi,Steve.I enjoy light verse and well-made doggerel,so I’m pleased to see you’ve decided to archive your own.Keep it up.

Thanks Mishari. I think I’ve rounded up most of my stuff from GU now (apart from the ones listed on the front page where I’ve sent out an SOS), although there may well be outriders I don’t even remember writing…. hope to add some brand new stuff soon.
Not everyone approves of verse on the Grauniad blogs, of course – here’s a pair of deliciously dyspeptic dissenters (the article and rest of the thread are well worth reading):

By the way,if you’re hunting down your own stuff,at the risk of being obvious, have you tried Googling-cynicalsteve,guardian..followed by a phrase or word from the verse you’re looking for?Or perhaps you can’t remember a word or phrase? In which case,Googling ‘cynicalsteve, comment is free’,will get you everything you’ve posted.A bit tiresome to have to go through them all but the Google results often contain a quote from the post or the title of the article, which might help.Actually,I’m sure you’ve alraedy thought of all this.Sorry.

….do I want to be one of those people who constantly googles their own name….?
I did try that, to be honest, Mishari, which found most stuff. There’s not really anything substantial left to find, apart from (for nostalgic reasons) my first piece. I can remember a key phrase from that (“your best thoughts unthunk”), but that didn’t bring up anything on google. It’s almost certainly on an ACGrayling or Theo Hobson thread; and the thought of wading through several 300 post threads littered with sky pixie spraints and happy-clappy droppings terrifies me….

Not all GU bloggers find you annoying, in fairness

….then I shall have to try harder….

Thanks for viewing, dib – I’ve posted this elsewhere, but it seems an apposite response:
To write free verse is something I’d kill for,
But it’s something I still lack the skill for.
Said the doctor “Oh dear!
I regret rhymorrhoea
Isn’t something we’ve yet found a pill for….

Time for some fun at the end of the thread
When the beers have run out and you’re headed for bed.
The Theists are sleeping, the Atheists drunk.
The argument’s over; your best thoughts unthunk.
You wake in a sweat with your best point by far:
An analogy based on sky pixies and Ra.
You rush to the keyboard, your fingers are twitching -
You’re desperate somehow to make fun of Hitchens.
But what’s that you read at the foot of the thread?
“Your three days are up: this blog is now dead!”
You limp back to bed, your faculties failing
But tomorrow, you promise, you’ll shaft A C Grayling….

Aha! Thanks for retrieving that piece, Godfrey Churncheer….nostalgia indeed….

What a great blog. Thanks to Juliet over at Musings from a Muddy Island for bringing this to my attention. The world needs more doggerel…logophile

Thanks, logophile….I perused some of Juliet’s links last night, and ended up at your site….which I enjoyed….there are so many fun sites out there, and too little time….I’ve bookmarked, so I’ll be back, though….

I typed into Google ‘tulipa accuminata source’ and you came up! Are you or do you know of a source for those wonderfully exotic little gems?
July 23, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Hi Jeanne
I can’t remember for sure where I bought T accuminata, but almost certainly it would have been from either Broadleigh Gardens:
http://www.broadleighbulbs.co.uk/
or Jacques Amand:
http://www.jacquesamand.com/
Another good source for similar plants – as long as you’re patient enough to grow from seed – is Jim & Jenny Archibald:
http://www.jjaseeds.com/
With Broadleigh & the Archibalds, it’s well worth contacting them directly to ask, even if a plant isn’t listed.
If I remember where I did get that tulip from, I’ll put the source here. Hope the above helps in the meantime.

PS – this site probably came up from your link as I’ve misspelled the plant….a search for “Tulipa acuminata” (one “c” only) gives better results….I really must go back and correct that caption….
