Dumb questions….

August 8, 2008

Once upon a time, one of my duties was to help out in a weekly class where the basic principles of pharmacology were demonstrated to medical students. In pairs, the future doctors performed a simple experiment not dissimilar to those performed by pioneers in the field a century or so previously, whereby a dose-response curve to a particular compound was constructed. Crucial to such experiments was (and still is) the preparation of a series of dilutions of the compound in question. Naturally each dilution vial must be distinctly labelled with a marker pen to avoid confusion. One week, I noticed that one pair of students seemed to be having trouble getting started. When I offered to help, one of the students asked, “How do I get the top off my marker pen?”

As some of you will be aware, I have been much exercised recently in trying to deal with scrapers: people who copy others’ blog posts and use them as hooks to their own battalions of dodgy websites. There is an established process to deal with these copyright infringements which, although relatively simple, is nonetheless fiddly, and must be followed accurately. In trying to understand the process, I’ve asked questions on various forums; questions which, to those familiar with these things, must be irritatingly familiar. Some people have responded with patient advice which they must have provided to others dozens of times before; others have been dismissively ratty. The assumption sometimes seems to be that with all the information available online, one must be an idiot not to be able to work the process out via a few searches.

I am sure there are plenty of nuclear physicists unable to boil an egg; brain surgeons who don’t know when to prune their fruit bushes; and rocket scientists who scratch their heads when their cars malfunction. (Many poets notoriously can’t even drive….but that’s another story….) Similarly, there are plenty of smart people out there who are at sea with one or more aspects of computing, even though they use the wretched machines daily. But getting answers to computer-related queries can be a fraught business. Those experienced in this field often seem disproportionately patronising. And yet, from discussing scraping on this blog and Michele’s, it’s become clear that even people who are knowledgeable about certain aspects of computing can be in the dark on DMCA notices and how to serve them. No-one is an expert in every field. Even smart people can ask apparently dumb questions.

I’ve been down the Adsense route before without much success….it also means one has to actually visit the offending site, which can be a good way to infect one’s computer….Adsense is pretty much the cause of many of these problems – if it wasn’t available on eg Blogger, there’d be little incentive for the scrapers….

Anyway, I think I’ve got a handle on how to deal with the scraping issue, although it’s a neverending battle….my point here was a more general one….

cs, I felt that this should be brought to your attention:

    http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4333821/Edgar_Allan_Poe_s_The_Raven_(Gay_Version).avi

    …don’t ask.

  3. doggerelist Says:

This may be a dumb question Mishari….but….um….why….?

In other news….good to see MM’s pal McGowan back, trolling for comments by slaughtering a few tired sacred cows….good, too, to see that most people are too sensible to fall for it….after his previous shamelessness, I admired the subtle way he dropped in his acquisition of an MPhil….jolly decent of him to mention it, as otherwise we might judge him on his words and think him a jumped up little tit; it’s a relief to know he’s actually an intellectual giant and we can now show appropriate gratitude that he’s deigned to walk amongst us….

  4. fmk Says:

steve: you’re aware of RyanAir’s case against scalping scrapers, aren’t you? Am presuming it gets some coverage over there. The German judgement last month was reported, I think. You should check out what they’ve had to do today.

  5. mishari Says:

Knowing your fondness for Poe’s Raven, I thought a gay version, (no, I have no idea what that entails), would tickle your jaded palate.

Clearly, stronger meat is called for: your ennui is reaching a critical stage. I’ll see what I can find…

  6. mishari Says:

Yeah, I saw the McGowan thread and after a very brief temptation to launch a rocket up his ignorant backside, I shrugged and decided he really isn’t worth the bother…anyway, who are we to dispute with a MPhil? We are not worthy.

  7. M. Le Chevalier de Mowbray Says:

Sorry to see you’re still having problems, cs. Bamboo has none-now approaching 3′ tall.

fmk – I’m not much of a flyer, so the Ryanair story passed me by. On googling it now, it seems pretty blatant. For some reason, many people seem to think web content is fair game for wholesale copying, but it’s just as subject to copyright as written text & images in the real world; just trickier to enforce. Obviously I don’t lose any money when my stuff’s nicked, but it still bugs me.

I’m pretty sure btw from viewing patterns here that some of my plant photos on previous posts have been used elsewhere, but I’m fairly relaxed about that. We even had one chap email to ask if he could use “The Gardener” image (a small cropped version of which is my avatar here & elsewhere.) At first he asked about buying the original stained glass version, but that’s a huge piece, would cost a good £400 +, and is hanging on my grandmother’s wall.

  9. doggerelist Says:

Mishari – there are (so I am told….) porn and/or gay versions of most of those classic films and themes….usually involving terrible puns….Flesh Gordon is one that comes to mind….

  10. mishari Says:

cs, I was vaguely aware of this fact, but Poe? Jesus, what next? Dickens? (geddit? Dick-ens? Nudge, nudge)…Coming Soon!!! The Sale of Two Titties!!!

I’m going to have a large drink now…

  11. doggerelist Says:

I rather suspect that whatever saucy titles we come up with have already adorned some cheeky videos….no doubt the producers employ teams of schoolboys to think up their titles….

  12. fmk Says:

Žižek in sizzlingly good form: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/aug/09/slavoj.zizek For me, that’s funnier than Michael Moore’s piece.

  13. doggerelist Says:

    “What makes you depressed?”

    “Seeing stupid people happy.”

    Heh, heh….

  14. doggerelist Says:

    McGowan’s immodesty simply beggars belief….

  15. mishari Says:

Yeah, and he’s got so very much to be modest about. He iritated me so much that I broke down and posted a comment. Doubtless, it’ll be deleted.

  16. doggerelist Says:

I honestly can’t recall anyone so smug, self-satisfied and just generally unpleasant writing on the books blog before. He really is quite odious.

  17. M. Le Chevalier de Mowbray Says:

He’s quite amusing, though. And not entirely serious, I would think.

  18. mishari Says:

Sadly, MM, I think his massive self-regard is only too serious..and given the tone of his replies, a man who favours the bludgeon over the rapier.

The more time I spend on the New York Review of Books site, the less point I can see to the Gruaniad’s book pages, the occasional good piece from Sam J. and Billy and Carol excepted.

  19. doggerelist Says:

I suspect he’s all too serious….just look at his mugshot at the top of the blog and tell me he doesn’t spend half the day in front of the mirror….

  20. M. Le Chevalier de Mowbray Says:

He should make a bit more effort to answer the points raised, rather than just dishing out the abuse. It seems unnatural, like having your pudding without your greens.

How do you rate Bethnal Green as a place to live, M? For a young person, I mean?

  21. doggerelist Says:

I lived on the Bethnal Green side of Hackney for a couple of years as a student….wouldn’t want to repeat the experience again….is one of your children thinking of moving there?

  22. M. Le Chevalier de Mowbray Says:

Yes, my daughter’s moving to London for the next stage of her seemingly never-ending education. When I lived in London (70s) it was pretty undesirable but she’s hearing that it’s very good now. Some of her potential flatmates are quite keen on it.

  23. mishari Says:

Actually, Bethnal Green is very trendy these days. Access to good street markets, lots of good parks, good pubs and clubs, good transport links and a large student population all make it a good place for the young. I think your daughter will like it.

This has all developed over the last 5 years or so, cs, so your experiences are of the bad old days. It’s improved almost beyond recognition.

  24. M. Le Chevalier de Mowbray Says:

    Thanks. I’ll pass it on.

  25. doggerelist Says:

Yes, I wouldn’t want to claim my impressions of the area from 25 years ago were still valid….I’m glad to hear it’s changed….I enjoyed my time in London – started off in posh Hampstead and moved steadily downhill till I ended up in a council flat in E8 – but the older me wouldn’t want to live in any city now….

  26. mishari Says:

No. Sadly, all that ‘hello sky, hello birds, hello clouds..’ stuff may be perfectly acceptable in the sticks but here in the Big Smoke, you’d be stripped down for parts and flogged off to the organ trade before you could say ‘Chelsea Flower Show’.

I spend hours every day on small arms practice, knife-fighting practice, garroting practice and explosives and sabotage techniques. But I find it’s a small price to pay for living in proximity to the Millenium Dome and Gordon Brown.

  27. doggerelist Says:

Sounds like nothing much has changed in the East End after all….

Gunshot is a fairly regular sound here, to be honest….although one assumes rabbits and birds are the intended targets….

  28. Michele Says:

Just to complete this post of Steve’s, Blogger has deleted the offending scraper posts. I couldn’t have done completed the necessary form without his dogged determination and hard work.
